Successful people have no need for a coach. Right? Au contraire. Here’s a great example.
Graeme McDowell, PGA professional known as G-Mac, has won eight tournaments and earned $6M in prize money since turning pro 10 years ago. (that can buy a lot of Guinness, his favorite adult beverage) One of those W’s was a major; the 2010 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach. Winning a major is a ginormous accomplishment.
Before playing his third round in this week’s 2012 U.S. Open at The Olympic Club in San Francisco, Graeme said he was “scared of going out there and messing up.” His biggest fear is failure.
The Northern Irishman had a quick convo with coach Bob Rotella on the putting green before walking to the first tee. He realized the other 71 players were probably thinking the same thing. Not to mention, the 84 players who already screwed up and failed to make the cut. “It puts it in perspective a little bit” McDowell said.
Following his coaching convo, G-Mac fired a 68; the second lowest score of the day.
Why does the 21st best professional golfer in the world have a coach? G-Mac, like most successful people, has a coach because of his commitment to get better.
G-Mac doesn’t need a coach, he wants one.
