Brain Based Rationale for Meeting Tips

by Steve Borek | Dec 20, 2011 | Assessments, Mindset, Performance

Pre-meeting preparationis crucial. For example, sleep well, think well.  An adult generally needs seven to nine hours of sleep on a regular basis.  (And none of this staying up late on weekends and thinking you can jump back to your routine on Monday.) Inconsistent...

Steve is one of the most energetic professionals I have had the pleasure to work with during his time as a Director with the Baldwinsville Chamber of Commerce. He continually thinks outside the box, consistently presenting innovative ideas and thoughts. One of Steve’s finest attributes, in my opinion, is his incredible gift for public speaking. He is remarkably engaging, as well as fun to watch and hear! Paired with that is a sincere desire to listen and learn from and about his peers.

Steve was an excellent coach. His attitude was laid back, honestly interested in my success, and held me accountable every step of the way. His counsel helped me follow through on a paradigm change fostering personal growth & direction. Working with Steve on “Now What” was a fresh approach to tackling that burning question, “what is next for me?” The twelve week process was exceptional and intentional. Tip of the Day

One small crack does not mean that you are broken….it means that you were put to the test and you didn’t fall apart. ~ Linda Poindexter >>> Just keep moving.

“People are always blaming their circumstances for what they are. I don’t believe in circumstances. The people who get on in this world are the people who get up and look for the circumstances they want, and if they can’t find them, make them.” ~George Bernard Shaw

You can’t help everyone, but you can help someone.

As I pulled into the environs of Asheville, I saw a homeless person standing on a corner, holding his proverbial cardboard sign. It read, I’m dreaming of a cheeseburger. I’ve never seen a more innovative message from a floater. This man has dormant potential. Anyone that creative has the ability to turn things around. I hope he does.

“The ability to learn faster than your competitors may be your only sustainable competitive advantage.” ~ Arie de Geus >>> The competition isn’t standing still. What are you learning?

Failing is the price you pay to enter the discovery room.

What’s the story you’re telling yourself? Are you describing your past or present or feeding yourself a script that will change your future?

Waiting for everything to be perfect is paralysis through analysis.

Spinning wheels or traction? My clients live in the latter.

Acknowledgements are gifts. How many gifts will you give today?

Stop shoulding all over yourself.

The short way is the long way and the long way is the short way.

The best leaders I’ve known create more leaders.

Be intentional about who you want to become.

If you’re not having fun, you’re doing something wrong. ~ Groucho Marx >>> Every day I make someone laugh. It’s who I am. My oxygen. Hearing others laugh and smile gives me life.

Pick the day. Enjoy it – to the hilt. The day as it comes. People as they come… The past, I think, has helped me appreciate the present – and I don’t want to spoil any of it by fretting about the future.

Change is one step away if you’re willing.

Be real. There’s a reason Brad Pitt gets huge bank to be someone else. It’s hard to do. Just be yourself.

You’ll never get ahead of anyone as long as you try to get even with him. ~ Lou Holtz  Translation? Let it go. You’ll feel lighter a lot quicker.

Are you the orchestra leader of your own life or are you allowing society and its institutions to dictate you how to live? Are you playing by someone else’s rules or creating your own? ~ Steve Siebold, Author, FAT LOSER! Mental Toughness Book for Dieters

And once the storm is over, you won’t remember how you made it through, how you managed to survive. You won’t even be sure that the storm is really over. But one thing is certain, when you come out of the storm, you won’t be the same person who walked in. That’s what this storm is all about. ~ Haruki Murakami

Desperation can cloud your thinking process. A coach can see what you can’t or aren’t willing to see.

Whatever makes you weird, is probably your greatest asset. ~ ~Joss Whedon >>> What’s your weirdness? 🙂

Goals help you create an unconscious strategy to move in the right direction.

Is your glass half empty or half full? Whatever your answer, put it all in a bigger glass! 🙂

Leaders are learners.

So many books, so little time.

I help clients stretch their minds and go to places they’ve never been. Once they expand their surroundings, reverting back to their outdated environment is never an option.

Great leaders inspire a shared vision.

What’s your life been about? Personally? Professionally?

The hardest part is taking the first step. Then taking another and another. Each successive step is easier than the previous one.

To crush your endgame you’ve got to be willing to commit. There is no Plan B.

Always remember that you are absolutely unique. Just like everyone else. ~ Margaret Mead >>> Show the world who you are.

Life is to be lived. ~ Katharine Hepburn >>> Are you living or simply surviving?

What’s the story you’re telling yourself? Don’t like your results? Change your story.

Where there’s smoke, there’s fire. What signs are you ignoring that can potentially cook your business like a charred hot dog? p.s. I put mustard on my hot dog. Ketchup? Sacrilegious. ;-p

“Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming Wow! What a Ride!” ~ Hunter S. Thompson

You can never be ready. There’s way too much information to know.

I succeeded by saying what everyone else is thinking. ~Joan Rivers >>>What do you really want to say?

Complacency is death.

Would you like a different outcome? Let’s board a new train with fresh useful baggage.

You lost the deal, client, job, etc. Feeling bummed about it? Don’t waddle in the muddle too long. Otherwise, you risk not seeing the next opportunity.

Hustle.

To be a real entrepreneur you always have to be looking forward. The moment you rest on your laurels is the moment your competition overtakes you. ~ Richard Branson >>> Most biz owners do enough to stay afloat.

“Being negative only makes a difficult journey more difficult. You may be given a cactus, but you don’t have to sit on it.” ~ Joyce Meyer >>> Take ownership, take action, and make it happen.

Usually, I don’t have the I Dream of Jeannie solution. Meaning, in one or two calls you’re totally transformed. Not usually the case. Change takes time.

All things are difficult before they are easy. ~ John Norley >>> When I struggle with something new I simply think I’m learning something new. This one thought changes my entire view of what I’m going through.

Keep on keepin on. You’re almost there.

Average is over. Be memorable to those you serve.

Meditation relaxes the mind. Until a few years ago I wasn’t a fan. Jerry Seinfeld practices Transcendental Meditation twice a day. He says it’s like your phone charger. TM gives him energy.

Leaders are always being watched.

If it’s important enough, you’ll find a way. If it’s unimportant you’ll come down with excusitis: all the reasons why you can’t do it.

No matter how busy you are, you must take time to make the other person feel important ~ Mary Kay Ash >>> Ahem. Stop looking at your electronic device.

Everything you want or who you desire to become begins with a choice.

Sometimes you’ve got to just get out of your own way.

What do you want more than anything else? Are you willing to do whatever it takes to get it?

“Begin challenging your own assumptions. Your assumptions are your windows on the world. Scrub them off every once in awhile, or the light won’t come in.” ~ Alan Alda >>> When’s the last time you cleaned your windows?

What’s the cost of not starting today?

Shine the spotlight on your team while applauding in the wings. Humility is the sign of a great leader.

You get to choose.

I admire a person who’s willing to do whatever’s necessary. ~Jack Sparrow >>> Are you willing?

“We all are manufacturers in a way – making good, making trouble or making excuses.” ~ H. V. Adolt >>> What kind of a manufacturer are you?

“Loosen up; you’re not going to convince them anyway. Speeches aren’t about turning archenemies into cheering supporters. Presentations are mainly opportunities to reassure those who already agree with you that you’re a horse worth betting on” ~Tom Peters

Saying things will eventually get better is a hope strategy. How’s that workin for ya?

“The only way around is through.” ~ Robert Frost >>> Does it feel scary? Great. Watch what happens when you get to the other side of fear.

Where is your focus? For most it’s on what they don’t want. Where your focus lands, is where your focus expands.

“In order to be irreplaceable one must always be different.” ~ Coco Chanel >>> Average is over. Set yourself apart so people notice. Otherwise you’ll blend with the masses in the land of mediocrity.

“I write one page of masterpiece to ninety-one pages of shit. I try to put the shit in the wastebasket.” ~ Ernest Hemingway >>> Early on, this quote helped me feel more confident about my blog writing.

Your intuition and your intellect should be working together… making love. That’s how it works best. ~ Madeleine L’Engle >>> When was the last time your intuition and intellect had a loving moment?

If you’re dissatisfied with your current life, ask yourself what your current life is a metaphor for. ~ Steven Pressfield >>> Well?

Cause I need to move, I need to wake up… I need to change, I need to shake up. ~ Melissa Etheridge > >>When clients hire me, things start to change. Their energy is different. That’s what it’s about. Changing your energy.

A coach is the mirror to your blind spots.

Take a look at your performance over the last month, quarter, year, etc. Where ever you land on the scale is a direct result of your thoughts. Change your thoughts and you’ll change your performance.

To change your results, you must change how your world is wired. What are you doing to improve your wiring?

Being authentic requires courage. Been there. I have the T-shirt.

Why not you? Huh?

I wasn’t poor back then, I just didn’t have any money. Mary Carillo’s commencement address, to the Elon graduating class of 2014. >>> It’s all a matter of perspective.

What if your customer could look inside your business. What would they see?

“Do not grow old, no matter how long you live. Never cease to stand like curious children before the Great Mystery into which we were born.” ~ Albert Einstein >>> Be more childlike; in a state of curiosity.

Celebrate every W.

“The ability to learn faster than your competitors may be your only sustainable competitive advantage.” ~ Arie de Geus >>> The competition isn’t standing still. What are you learning?

Does your business need buffing? Where would you begin first?

I’m convinced that about half of what separates the successful entrepreneurs from the non-successful ones is pure perseverance. ~Steve Jobs >>> Consistent action is the key.

“Too often, we put up with mediocrity, telling ourselves that later in life we’ll do what we want.” ~ Daniel  >>> Most people land on the island of mediocrity. Ho hum.

You were going to make a change last month, last year, etc. though you put it off. How’s that working?

A coach helps you to get where you want to go, faster. The superior man is modest in his speech, but exceeds in his actions. ~Confucius >>> Actions speak louder than words. Easier said than done.

Be patient when it seems things are not going right and may never be right again. Accept that what is yours will come to you in the right way at just the right time. ~ Iyanla Vanzant >>> Ya gotta believe!

A trained coach helps the client uncover and own the new direction. The new place is in the clients bones. They just can’t see it. A coach really helps.

Where the focus goes the focus grows. What focus seeds are you planting?

When you immerse yourself in the things you love, and I mean actually love, something happens. You begin to get excited and inspired. ~ Tom Wittlin >>> Focus on clients, projects, etc. that get you jazzed!

In what way are you different from one year ago?

Hopefully your professional career pays the light bill. Is it lighting you up? If yes, you’re part of the 29%. The majority, 71% of the workforce, are disengaged from their jobs. I can help you change that.

Success is inevitable when the plan aligns with your who.

Are you paralyzed with fear? That’s a good sign. Fear is good. Like self-doubt, fear is an indicator. Fear tells us what we have to do. Remember our rule of thumb: The more scared we are of a work or calling, the more sure we can be that we have to do it. ~ Steven Pressfield >>> Like the time I danced the runway in front of hundreds of strangers to raise money for charity. Scary! But I did it!

They’ll never change! You’ve heard this or even said it to someone else. I’m in the *People * Can * Change * Business.* I see transformations happen all the time.

OK, keep thinking about it. At some point, you or your idea will become irrelevant.

“If the doors of perception were cleansed every thing would appear to man as it is, Infinite. For man has closed himself up, till he sees all things thro’ narrow chinks of his cavern.” ~ William Blake

The superior man is modest in his speech, but exceeds in his actions. ~Confucius >>> Actions speak louder than words. Easier said than done.

Creating sustainable change in your business requires sustainable behavioral change. A qualified coach can help you with both.
